The ground breaking ceremony was conducted on Oct 25 1967 for new sanctuary. The Sanctuary was designed by architect Nils Schweizer, a student at Taliesin and on site manager of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose influence can be seen in the style of the building.

Sanctuary and social hall seating 450. Phase one of a multi phased project. Project Architect Tom Hurley's wife Rebecca, a professional weaver at the time, wove the scroll covers for the torahs.

A Lutheran sanctuary seating 400 with adjoining administrative and educational facilities. A large exterior semi-covered gathering area embraced the structures.

Schweizer Associates was selected to develop a master site plan for St. Richards Church. Nils Schweizer, then President of the AIA Committee on Church Architecture and an Episcopalian, along with Thomas Hurley designed St. Richard's as it stands today.
